1. Standard languages are usually based on an existing dialect of the language. What can you find out about the difficulties of choosing a variety for standardization in Indonesia? Do you think that there are difficulties at all?

2. What is the difference between ‘diglossia’, ‘bilingualism’ and ‘multilingualism?’
First you have to explain each term. Later you have to explain the differences based on the terms that you explain previously.

3. What is code switching? What is the difference between code switching and code mixing? Explain the difference between ‘topical code switching’; ‘affective code switching’ and ‘metaphorical code switching’. Include examples in your answer.

4. Note what you call your female teacher in different contexts:
a. Addressing her
i. In the office
ii. On the phone
iii. When you send sms
iv. In a shop/mall.
b. Referring to her
i. At home to your family members (when she’s not present, of course)
ii. When you meet her in a public place (like shop/mall) with your family members.
iii. To an acquaintance who doesn’t know her.
iv. To her colleagues in the office when she’s present
v. To her colleagues in the office when she’s not present.
What influences your choice of address form and reference form in each of these contexts? Your analysis should also show your understanding about the role of social factors and dimensions in influencing the situations.

Answers should be typewritten
Use your own words
Use all the reference and textbooks that I provide for in the class.

GIVING COMMENTS

It's rather cumbersome to track comments actually - which is why I don't really like using blogspot.com but anyway.

I will try to keep track of them anyway. Can you actually make a post in this blog? You can, right? So if you want to say something that is not related to the weekly question then it is better if you just post in the blog, instead of making comments to the entry.

Let's see how it works.

FILE DOWNLOAD

So how's it going? Can you download the files from the link? You have to copy the link from here and paste it in another window. It will lead you to the mediafire site. Some of you said that it did not work but..it kind of work for me.

Give it a try and tell me how you fare when we meet again during the midterm test.

Articles and announcement

Dear Students,

Welcome to our class blog. I hope you will check this blog regularly since I will post some announcements here from time to time.

I will upload the questions for this week soon, probably tomorrow.

(You have to copy and paste the link to get to my folder - I don't know if this will work, so please inform me soon if you can't download them)

These are the articles that you will need for the topic of Language and Gender. Please download them accordingly. Remember that these articles are copyrighted and I don't allow the distribution of the link outside our class.

oh, and apart from the questions that you have to answer, of course you are also welcome to give any comments about our class, what you like and what you don't like, what you think about a certain issue - basically anything at all.

Hope this blog will prove beneficial for all of us.
